The US military is continually searching for new weapons to coordinate into the power. As of late they supplanted the standard-issue Barretta gun with another one made by SIG SAUER, presently they are taking a gander at various plans to supplant both the M4 Carbine and the M249 SAW. The military is considering the program the NGSW (Next Generation of Squad Weapons).

Soldier Systems published a press release announcing one of the bids from Textron Systems who teamed up with Heckler & Koch and Winchester. The team is not only looking to replace the old weapon systems but also introduce a new caliber the 6.8mm.

“NGSW is an ambitious program in both scope and schedule which will replace the M4 Carbine and M249 Squad Automatic Weapon, both in 5.56mm,” stated Soldier Systems.”The issue with these two weapons is that the US Infantrymen remains overmatched by enemies who employ longer-range small arms.

Texitron released a trailer explaining the new weapon system and caliber.

Other companies, such as SIG SAUER and General Dynamics-OTS, are also submitting their own designs for consideration. So this model is not set in stone as the weapon of the future, but it certainly shows promise.

Here is an up close look at the new designs:

The Textron System’s NSGW-Rifle. It would replace the M4 Carbine if accepted.

The belt-fed Automatic Rifle is designed to replace the M249 SAW. The design also replaces metal links with polymer circumferential links.

The new 6.8mm cartridge was designed to have a longer range than the 5.56 and also deliver more energy on target. It performs in a similar fashion to the commercial 270 Win Short Mag round.
